چکیده This manual has been developed for college and other teaching personnel who strive to provide optimum support for students who are either deaf or hard of hearing. It describes the experiences of Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina, in serving students with hearing impairments. The manual includes information on: (1) the types of hearing losses and different communication methods, including speech reading, assistive listening devices (ALDs), real time captioning, and the National Dual Party Relay System; (2) institutional and student responsibility; (3) options in academic postsecondary settings, including mainstreamed programs, federally funded centers, and federally funded colleges/universities; (4) support services for students with hearing impairments, including counseling services, interpreting services, notetaking services, tutorial services, ALDs, testing accommodations, and classroom accommodations; (5) responsibilities of the disability service counselor/coordinator; (6) how to hire an interpreter; (7) serving students with secondary disabilities; and (8) financial assistance services. A glossary of related terms is provided, along with a list of relay services, a sample accommodations form, a sample notetaking services form, and a sample audiogram. (Contains 10 references.) (CR)
