The notion of a ‘deaf personality’ has, for many years, been of interest to professionals involved in work with deaf people. It appears that those who think there is a psychology of deafness are those who tend to embrace the medical or clinical model, while those who suggest there is no such psychology favour the cultural and linguistic model of deafness. This chapter contains an exploration of the term ‘deaf personality’ including a discussion on cultural Deaf identity. Mental health issues are also highlighted.
