The first example is from Jericho and dates to the Middle Bronze Age (eighteenth century BC). During Kathleen Kenyon's excavations at the site between 1952 and 1958, some twenty-seven shaft tombs of this period were explored, one of the most impressive being Tomb P19 (Kenyon 1965: 388-410, fig. 193 [plan and elevation] and pI. 18:1). |
